What is Soft Tissue Grafting?
Soft tissue grafting is a surgical procedure that covers exposed root surfaces with gingival tissue (gums). This can be done for aesthetic reasons, to prevent further recession, or protect the tooth from future periodontal problems. Gingival grafting is also known as a gum graft and is done regularly by periodontists in the Keene area.
Gum recession is the unwanted loss of gum tissue along the gum line. When this occurs, the roots of your teeth become exposed. This can cause sensitivity and an increased risk of cavities and infection. Gum grafting can help cover exposed roots and prevent further recession while also protecting the tooth roots from developing cavities, resulting in the future need for root canal therapy or even permanent extraction of otherwise healthy teeth.
How is Soft Tissue Grafting Performed?
Gum grafting is usually performed under local anesthesia. Your periodontist makes incisions in your gums to access the underlying bone, or sometimes, your periodontist may prepare your gum without any incision. The graft may be harvested from another area in your mouth or your periodontist may recommend using an artificial / synthetic tissue instead. The graft will be placed over the exposed roots and sutured into place. You may experience some mild discomfort or swelling following this procedure, though this can be controlled with medication.
What to Expect from Gum Graft Recovery
Most people recover from gum grafting surgery within a week or two. It is vital to follow your periodontist’s aftercare instructions carefully to minimize any discomfort and ensure a full recovery.
